Adidas Auctions Off Sneakers Perfect for the Foodie Fashionista

Thanks to Adidas’ collaboration with Refinery29, you’ll never have to choose between pizza and the gym again.

The companies recently commissioned 11 female artists from across the country to design Adidas UltraBOOST X sneakers inspired by each of the 50 states. Several of the sneakers ended up looking like the respective state’s most notable food item (see Georgia’s peach shoe), while others were decorated to represent the state’s landscape, culture or favorite pastime.

From Kentucky’s Derby-inspired shoe to Wisconsin’s cheese sneaker, each of the one-of-a-kind kicks was created with a specific state in mind. The most buzz-worthy creation went to New Jersey’s pizza sneaker. Artist Jen Mussari created the delectable design by painting the sneaker yellow with red and white lines to represent the sauce and cheese. For a more realistic effect, she topped the shoes off with 3-D pepperoni pieces and a cutout of a slice of pizza. The artists all started with plain white UltraBOOST X sneakers and used mediums including sand, beading, thread, clay and faux flowers to create their designs. These fashionable-yet-functional shoes showcase not only state pride, but also female empowerment. The limited edition “BOOST the Nation” collection was made entirely by women, for women.

Each custom-made shoe was sold in a silent digital auction on the Adidas website from July 4-11. All the proceeds went to Women Win, an organization that empowers young girls with leadership skills and addresses gender equality through sports. A pair of regular UltraBOOST X sneakers costs $180, but the highest bid for a pair was up to $2,000 the day before the auction ended, an Adidas spokesperson said. Adidas has yet to disclose the total proceeds raised through this collaboration.
