Cheap Eat of the Week: Fried Dumpling

By Jewelle Trotman

As a college student in NYC, having a cheap food connoisseur is essential. We all want to save money, but why sacrifice a good meal? I’m here to let you know that you’ve got options! From deals to discounts, I’ve got you covered.

My friend Rhandle introduced me to this dumpling spot tucked away on a street in Chinatown. When we arrived, she pointed to the menu in the window showing the price — $1.25 for 5 dumpling pieces. After that, I couldn’t wait to rush inside to place my order. One…dollar…and…twenty-…five…cents?! What?! For that price, I wouldn’t have been disappointed if the dumplings were mediocre. But damn, those dumplings were good!

Fried Dumpling is one of the “cheapest eats” I know. For $1.25, you get 5 pieces. 25 cents for each extra piece you order. With that being said, even if you get 10 pieces and some water, your total is still under $5!

Fried Dumpling is definitely a “grab and go” sort of place. Customer service isn’t great but the price and product outweighs lousy CS. They offer soda as well as water and soup is also on the menu. Since the space is pretty tight, there are only a few seats along the side. If all the seats are occupied and it’s a nice day, take your food to the nearby park and enjoy! There’s a mirror on the wall which is great for checking your teeth for any remains of the dumplings (it happens)!

The dumplings have a great filling. It has wonderful flavor, I can’t rave about them enough — a type of flavor that I’ve never tasted before. The dumplings were seasoned really well, giving them a savory taste. There is soy and hot sauce available which compliments the dumplings; other patrons tend to hug it because it’s just that good. The fried coating meets right in the middle at chewy and crunchy.

My friend and I shared the food, but once we were done –I wanted more. Since that day, I crave them often. As I’m writing this, I’m planning my next trip to Fried Dumpling in my head. One of our friends introduced it to my friend, she introduced it to me, and now I’m introducing it to you.

I rate the dumplings 5/5.

Check back next week for some more cheap eats!
