BTS, otherwise known as Bangtan Boys or Beyond the Scene, are a seven-member South Korean boy band that has recently been taking over America by storm. Since their debut as a group in 2013, they’ve been able to build themselves up in both South Korea, America, and various other countries. They’ve literally started from the bottom and now they’re here.
Just a few weeks ago, they released their newest album Love Yourself: Her along with their title track featured on the album, “DNA”. Their newest album and song have both made their way up to the Billboard charts, making them one of the few high-ranking Korean groups to ever make it on the charts. Love Yourself: Her debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 Album chart while their title track, “DNA” jumped from number 85 to 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. They’ve become the only Korean act to appear on both of the charts at once.
In an interview with Billboard, the group said, “Our dreams are coming true this week with a number one entrance to 73 countries on iTunes, and we are excited to share it with ARMY. We are very thankful for Billboard’s support from the beginning, and excited that Love Yourself: Her is charting at No. 7 on the Hot 200 and No. 85 on the HOT 100 for “DNA” on the Billboard charts.” (ARMY is what their fanbase is called.)
But the list of achievements doesn’t end there. Not only have they won countless awards in South Korea, where they are considered one of the most popular groups, they were also able to win the Top Social Artist Award at the Billboard Music Awards this past May.
This is an impressive feat not just for BTS, but for the South Korean music industry in general. Breaking into the American music industry, especially as a foreign group, can be challenging. There are many things that can act as obstacles for a foreign group, such as BTS, like the language and prejudice against their countries. But for the past few years, the American music industry has shown an open mind to music from all over the world.
If you’re even just a little curious about who they are and want to hear more, go check out their “DNA” music video. You won’t be disappointed.
