Tonight, countless people of all genders, ages, races, and body types, will gather at The Untitled Space to launch the opening of the group exhibition, BODY BEAUTIFUL, whose purpose is to do exactly that: to celebrate explore the concept of body positivity through the eyes of 50 diverse contemporary artists.
Curated by gallery director, Indira Cesarine, BODY BEAUTIFUL features artworks across a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, photography, video, and sculpture that question the human figure’s accuracy as a mode of self representation. “As a curator I felt it was important to include works by artists of all genders and generations, as well as represent all body types in this narrative,” says Cesarine.
“To me “Body Positive” should be inclusive of all shapes and sizes, skin colors, perfections and imperfections – including “skinny” bodies, plus size figures, pregnant bodies, bodies with stretch marks, scarring, wrinkles, aging—and yes, beautiful bodies size 0 to size XXXXL.”
The exhibition will raise funds for Cesarine’s newly launched initiative, Art4Equality, whose mission is to “support the creation of empowering artwork, exhibitions and public art that can impact social change, raise awareness and inspire our community.”
In 2019, social media has proven to be a breeding ground for body shaming and unrealistic expectations. Fortunately, countless influencers and artists are challenging the hyper-unrealistic expectations that beauty standards have grown to be and represent.
In a society that continuously reinforces the concept that beauty is a woman’s greatest asset (and a depreciating one at that), this is a breath of fresh air; a conversation that needs to be had.
