The pleated skirt trend has been around for what seems like forever and doesn’t seem to be dying out anytime soon.
Vogue released an article called “Now Trending: Pleats Please,” back in October 2016 which emphasized how to make sure your mid-skirt was up-to-date: add pleats. The article referenced Karlie Kloss, who was seen biking at the time in a Gucci pleated skirt that she paired with Adidas Stan Smiths making a fashionable, yet comfortable combo. Beyoncé even hopped on the trend by embracing her inner girl’s girl, also sporting Gucci, complete with candy stripes and a monogrammed baseball cap.
In 2017, Marie Claire gave us the best styles and shades to wear in pleated skirts. The styles were seen on the catwalks back then from designer brand Chloe to Stella McCartney.
The pleated skirt is super versatile and comes in a variety of colors, fabrics, and styles, and can suit every budget, sartorial preference, and shape. Short and midi skirt lengths are suitable for petites, while taller girls can get away with a longer length. According to Marie Claire, “Pear-shaped gals should look for smaller, narrow pleats rather than box pleats and team with heels to elongate your silhouette.”
A pleated skirt can also go from daytime to nighttime when stylized the right way. Simply switching out your ballet flats for strappy heels can do this. It’s not just for “girly girls” either. You can add an edge but pairing it with a leather moto jacket and boots or opting for metallics and faux leather.
Vogue named the pleated skirt trend as one of the “Top 10 Fashion Trends of Autumn/Winter 2018/2019.” In these recent years it has been spotted on the runways of Valentino, Lanvin, and Balenciaga — styled in numerous ways. You can wear pleated skirts with chunky-soled creepers (seen in Sacai’s collection), or more realistically, with a tight bright knit top a la Topshop.
It’s one of those pieces that is suitable for any kind of season or occasion. When winter comes you can style it with a woolen jacket, tuck in a cashmere sweater underneath, and pair it with knee-high boots. This fall you can toughen up your feminine pleated skirt with a denim jacket and loafers, and then get ready for spring with a basic tee and sneakers like Karlie Kloss. It’s also perfect for summer when it’s too hot for pants. Just search for colorful prints or a pleated Nike mini like Bella Hadid.
Pleated skirts are kind of like plain white tees, they will never go out of fashion and are a timeless piece that can easily be added to your everyday look.
