Moon Magic: Casting Intention With The Lunar Cycle

All over the world, the moon is revered for its power, lure, and has long held a mystical place in history. In folklore, werewolves are often associated with the full moon, and similarly, the word, ‘lunatic’ is derived from the theory that people act wild during full moons. The moon’s gravitational pull has a strong effect on earth’s water, creating low and high tides. One must consider that the moon might affect us, as well.

Living with the moon cycles can create more harmony and balance within your life. When you work with the natural order of the universe, you will find things happen swiftly. This article will introduce you to moon magic, teach you about each phase of the lunar cycle, as well as what they represent magically, in order to help you ideally adjust your life during each phase.

The New Moon 🌑

This is a time of new beginnings. The cycle is just starting; the moon in the sky is barely visible, and as she grows, so shall you. The new moon is a great time to begin a new manifestation that you hope to cultivate by the full moon. If you’re new to manifestation, do not be discouraged if your desires do not come into fruition within one moon cycle, as these skills are difficult to master. The idea is that, when you start something during the new moon, you are able to harness the growing energy of the waxing moon, in order to continue it.

Good activities for the new moon include going on a first date, applying for a new job, changing your style, starting a new creative project, or even beginning a new healthy activity. Lighting a candle while thinking of your intention is a quick and easy way to manifest. To use some color magic in combination with your candle manifestation, check out my last article. Matching your candle color with your intention will intensify your manifestation.

The Waxing Moon 🌒

This refers to the period between the new and full moon, when the moon grows in the sky. As the moon grows, so does your intention and ability to expand. You are able to work on gaining things.

Good activities for the waxing moon include anything where you want to increase energy. Things such as manifesting prosperity, deepening your relationships, working on an already existing project, researching, and learning. Continue to light candles to build up the growing energy.

The Full Moon 🌕

Leading up to a full moon, you may feel uncertain, however, it is when she is fully illuminated, that you are brought into clarity. The full moon is a time of completion, great power, and also, at times, great confusion. In the tarot, the moon card represents diving into your intuitive and psychic subconscious for greater understandings- something that you may not necessarily understand at first. In witch world, a ritual on the full moon is referred to an esbat.

Good activities for the full moon include anything that increases your psychic awareness. Although manifestation is super powerful during a full moon, you may feel very drained during this time. Meditating with an amethyst, moonstone, or labradorite crystal will help increase intuition, and connection to a higher power. Another simple way to celebrate the full moon, is to do some divination. Divination is the practice of seeking knowledge by spiritual means. Common forms of divination are tarot, runes, and pendulums. If you’re unfamiliar with these practices, a simple way to explore divination is scrying. Scrying is the practice of foretelling the future with a reflective surface. A simple way to start scrying is to take a magical bath. Drop a bath bomb in the water and see what motifs the suds make. What do these motifs mean to you? For example if you see a heart, a new lover may be coming your way. If you do not have access to a bathtub, you can take a bowl of water outside under the moon. You will see motifs from the reflection of light, that will also give you intuitive messages.

The Waning Moon 🌘

The waning moon refers to the time period between the full and new moon. This is when the moon is fading. The waning moon represents the releasing of energy. Ask the questions: What do I want to let go of? What is no longer serving me? This is not a good time to manifest. Instead, let go of what is hindering your growth, so that when the moon is new again, you can manifest things that will help you flourish.

Good activities for the waning moon are any kind of releasing, or cleansing- such as cleaning the home, letting go of hurtful relationships, giving away things you no longer need, cutting your hair, expressing bottled-up feelings, and even having a good, cleansing cry. Another way to release is to burn incense. Think of what it is that you would like to rid yourself of, as you watch the incense burn away. Once the incense is entirely burned down, blow away the ashes with a final, releasing breath.

Harnessing the power of the moon is just one way that you can manifest a your goals and dreams. Still, these lunar suggestions are just that: suggestions. In my experience, living with the lunar cycle and the natural order of the universe has made life a lot easier. I hope that by sharing my knowledge and experience, your life will benefit as well, or at least be a little more magical.
