Kendall Jenner Goes Vogue

By Yerellys Michel

The 20-year-old  Keeping Up With the Kardashians star isn’t the first person in her family to grace the cover of Vogue magazine, but she is the first to be featured in 52 pages of the spread. The spread contains one article, in which journalist, Robert Sullivan follows Kendall Jenner around for fashion week and covers her discussion about social media- how she curates her online image and what it means to have so many followers.

There are several interviews with designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Estée Lauder, Tory Burch and Michael Kors which compares Jenner to Ali MacGraw. He says she is, “sophisticated, but laid-back. She’s both. She’s chic. She’s the Ali MacGraw for the Instagram generation.” They also recorded a conversation that Jenner had with Tory Burch in which Burch asks her if she is planning to go off to college. She replies, “You talk to people and they say the reason they went to college was to get a job, but I already have a job, so…” Jenner goes on to explain that seeing the world as a model has been a big part of her education. She also confesses that she needs to be more active with charity and might do something with animals down the line.

The model also met up with Knicks NBA player, Carmelo Anthony and shot some hoops. He even asked her for a picture for social media. This same day, the Yeezy Season 3 show debuted at Madison Square Garden. Jenner reflects on this moment and says, “It gave me a lot to think about. I’m aware of the incredible opportunity I’ve been given by coming into this business. I mean, I’ve dreamed of being a part of this my whole life. Ten years from now, I can only hope to have harnessed all of this experience and opportunity into something impactful and meaningful. Either that, or maybe Carmelo can put in a good word with the Knicks for me, LOL.”

This issue is polybagged with another issue of Vogue featuring Rihanna on the cover, and released this month. Inside the issue there are three pages dedicated to Estée Lauder. Vogue makes it clear that this issue is an editorial and is not sponsored, but created by magazine editors, and most of the images are repurposed. Inside, there’s a fashion spread by Testino showing the model in a couple of summer looks, including a Michael Kors dress, various swimsuit shots and a sportier shot of Jenner on a horse wearing a Marc Jacobs sweater and Eberjey bikini bottom.

It hasn’t been that long since the model has been in the modeling game and she is already on top. She started hitting major runways shows since the age of 18.  In New York fashion shows like Givenchy, Balmain, Chanel and so many more, her list continues to grow every day. It’s no surprise that she has had so much success in just such a short period of time. With Kris Jenner as her manager and the Kardashian/Jenner Klan behind her, this is only the beginning of her take over. This past year treated the model wonderfully by accomplishing her dream of walking the Victoria’s Secret fashion show- and this year seems to be no different.

Jenner’s fame continues to grow just as her social media. She currently has 53 million Instagram followers, 16.3 million Twitter followers, an app, and recently, a Snapchat. She provides her fans with little snippets of her life throughout her social media channels.

She talks about the topic by sayig, “I mean, it’s all so crazy to me,” she tells Sullivan, “cause it’s so not real life—to stress out about a social-media thing. It has to be organic.” Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein contributes to Jenner’s social media. “She is a combination of things. She is beautiful. She exudes American ease. She’s young. As a house, you become part of the culture by embracing someone like her.” Her brand continues to grow as she connects with different designers, celebrities and other models.

The model surrounds herself with popular social light/models like Hailey Baldwin, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Justin Bieber, Justin Skye and many more. Her group of friends isn’t as big as sister Kylie Jenners’ group of friends. She says that she has a very close group of friends which she hangs out with. As we can tell throughout the years, her group of friends has changed. She used to have normal friends who went to highschool with her, but now all of her friends are celebrities.

She discusses her most popular post on Instagram by saying, “I was having a bad day. I wasn’t in the flow. I was like, everyone sucks. That’s when I did my best image. I was lying in bed and messing with it. And I thought, Is this good? And I just posted it, and I remember looking at it right away and having a lot of likes and saying, ‘Huh.’ Organic! She says that the only way to have a lot of followers is to make your social media platforms look organic, as if you weren’t even trying. Her last piece of advice was about restraint. “You don’t want to do too many posts,” she said. “You want to leave them wanting to come back. Mystery!”
