From the moment H&M chose Moschino as its collab designer for 2018, it was a perfect fit. And finally, this past Thursday, the long-anticipated collection dropped. It is no doubt that Jeremy Scott’s kitsch aesthetic effortlessly transitions between high and low fashion. Trendy and tacky is something that Scott does best. This is why his work seamlessly blends with the H&M brand.
“The Moschino x H&M lookbook is like a party; celebrating the fun, the pop, the creativity, and the energy of the people and the collection,” Scott told Vogue. The line ranges from $12.99 to $499.00, making it affordable for most H&M shoppers to own a Moschino piece.
As for the designs, Scott took influence from his previous collections, even dubbing it a collection of his “greatest hits”. Quirky, fun, and diverse, bags and earrings shaped liked condoms, with the words “Ready to Wear” cheekily emblazoned on them, as well as Disney characters dressed in 90’s garb, are just some of the kitschy-y motifs in the collection.
There’s no doubt that the line is oversaturated with celebrities, nostalgia, and logo-mania. What makes Scott so successful is his combination of street and couture, as well as his understanding of humor towards American pop culture.
Leading up to the release, the line had a huge campaign, including a runway show with supermodels Winnie Harlow Bella, Gigi, and Anwar Hadid, as well as the support of Naomi Campbell, Ariel Winter, Aquaria, and Madonna.
Just like Scott, the line is so tacky that it’s trendy, and so trendy that it’s tacky. The collab sold out online within 3 days, however, you can still shop it at select stores. Well, what’s left of it.
