Cheap Eat of the Week: Songkran Thai Kitchen

By Jewelle Trotman

As a college student in NYC, having a cheap food connoisseur is essential. We all want to save money, but why sacrifice a good meal? I’m here to let you know that you’ve got options! From deals to discounts, I’ve got you covered.

There are many Thai food restaurants around Manhattan, but how many of them advertise student discounts and are just a few steps away from FIT? Songkran Thai Kitchen has the proximity and price that students look for. The restaurant offers a 10% discount to students and the prices are affordable all day, but get there in time for the lunch special (11am-4pm) if you want to save a few extra bucks. The lunch special is served Monday through Friday, which includes a choice of 8 starters such as Thai salad and spring rolls, as well as a soft drink. If you can’t make it for the lunch special, don’t worry. There’s a great deal for dinner called “Hansa Dinner Prix Fixe!” Prices start at $18.95 and with that you get a choice of an appetizer, entree, dessert, and drink. The venue is small and the decoration gives it character. Songkran accepts reservations and also does take-out!

When I go to Songkran, I order Pad Thai, which is just about everyone’s favorite Thai food dish. I’ve tried a lot of Pad Thai and the one at Songkran is one of the best. Songkran’s Pad Thai perfectly meets at the middle of sweet and savory. I love how soft the noodles are. Adding chicken to the order puts it over the top; it has great texture and taste. I love to order Thai Iced Tea anywhere I go and Songkran is no exception. Their tea is creamy and rich, and it’s definitely worth the few extra dollars since it completes the meal.

I rate the Pad Thai dish 5/5.

Check back next week for some more cheap eats!
