Cheap Eat of the Week: The Melt Shop

Written by Aurora Hinz, editing and pictures by Sabine Smith

As a college student in NYC, having a cheap food connoisseur is essential. We all want to save money, but why sacrifice a good meal? We’re here to let you know that you’ve got options! From deals to discounts, we’ve got you covered.

The Melt Shop offers the nostalgia of grilled cheese with upgraded twists – all for a Cheap Eats price! The entire menu is under $10 and offers great sides and customizations. Their shakes are no joke either, but for this installment, we chose to highlight the classic cheese pulls of a truffle melt and side of tomato soup. The sandwich itself was $7.49 and came with muenster cheese, arugula, black pepper and truffle oil on country white bread. The portion was filling, fragrant and hit all the spots that a perfect melty grilled cheese should. Even though we took our order to-go, the cheese was still gooey when we arrived home – proving a perfect grab-and-go place for all of us at FIT students. The side tomato soup was only $3.25 and was piping hot. This tomato soup was homemade and the flavor gave it away. Unlike most fast-food soups, this wasn’t watered down but instead was super thick and creamy. It was the perfect thing to dunk the truffle melt in for the ultimate food-combo. This spot was a total 10/10!

The order was prepared quickly, the staff was helpful and patient (even though we came in close to closing time), and there was tons of in-house seating available. Once this NYC weather decides to lighten up a little bit and lets some sunshine through, you can enjoy your melts on an open sun-filled patio. The Melt Shop’s prime location and price point make it a Cheap Eats worth trip!
