Cheap Eat of the Week: The Dollar Slice Duel

By Jewelle Trotman

As a college student in NYC, having a cheap food connoisseur is essential. We all want to save money, but why sacrifice a good meal? I’m here to let you know that you’ve got options! From deals to discounts, I’ve got you covered.

Dollar pizza slices are one of the novelties of New York. Sometimes a cheap composite of gooey cheese, yummy tomato sauce and chewy bread (with some seasonings sprinkled on top) is all you need.

Pizza is the perfect option for someone pressed for time — and “dollar pizza” is the best option for a college student pressed for time and money. There is an unspoken understanding between you and the cashier, which is to get in and out. Have your money ready because the line moves fast. And yes that’s right, just a dollar, no extra tax…no hassle.

FIT is near two great dollar pizza places. Whether in between classes or treating yourself at the end of a long day, you’ve got your pick. 99¢ Best & Fresh Pizza and 2 Bros. are great in different ways. I sampled a cheese slice at both places, and here’s the breakdown:

99¢ Best & Fresh Pizza

  • Small with nowhere to sit (barely room to stand)
  • Some string lights above cashier for “decoration”
  • Unappealing yellowish tint to lighting

Score: 5

The Pizza

  • Can smell from down the block …yum
  • Wasn’t too cheesy — it didn’t slide off like with some slices
  • Nice crunch after taking a bite
  • Crust had nice size and texture but the fluffiness varies
  • Kind of greasy (make sure you take napkins)
  • I added garlic and paprika which gave it some extra flavor

Score: 8

2 Bros. Pizza

  • Fair size with tables to stand at and places to sit
  • Bright lights and white tiled walls give off a cool ambience
  • Open doors and windows are inviting and let in fresh air

Score: 9

The Pizza

  • Thin and floppy — good for those who like to fold their pizza
  • Offered many specialty slices with things like like pepperoni, olives, sausage, mushroom, pineapple, and ham
  • Cheese tasted okay, maybe needed more tomato sauce
  • Was missing some flavor
  • Had garlic and paprika on top for a fair comparison

Score: 7

The Verdict

99¢ Best & Fresh Pizza is the champ. The location makes it convenient and I prefer the pizza. I like the cheese consistency and taste, the crust is nice and soft. The overall texture is a winner especially since I’m not a “pizza folder.” 2 Bros. is a better place to sit down and enjoy the slice, but most times I just want to grab and go.

Perform the pizza taste test yourself.
