Cheap Eat: Masala Times

As a college student in NYC, having a cheap food connoisseur is essential. We all want to save money, but why sacrifice a good meal? We’re here to let you know that you’ve got options! From deals to discounts, we’ve got you covered.

GREENWICH VILLAGE – The self-proclaimed “…ambassadors of Bollywood and katti rolls” located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood sells Indian street food with a goal to spread the bright colors, incite drama, and sell lots of masala found in your favorite Bollywood films. The restaurant’s walls are plastered with comparisons between Hollywood and Bollywood culture, the tables are printed with smart anecdotes about Bollywood and the food is inspired by the over-the-top loudness of Bollywood films.

Their menu includes a wide range of goodies—everything from kebabs, biryani dishes, katti rolls, paav, curry, lots of mouth-watering sides and drinks. Sabine went for the Tandoori Mushrooms which were shiitake marinated in spices and sour cream. She said they tasted kind of like dry-rubbed ribs. The mushrooms were meaty, not soggy, and paired with sides of rice, pickled onion salad and a piece of flatbread (which was the size of a frisbee when unfolded). I opted for a chicken tikka masala curry box which was also served with the same sides. The chicken was added into the curry from one of the kebabs. You could taste all the great grill marks along with a full-bodied spice from the curry. Both dishes were great comfort food to make you super cozy after a dreaded winter’s walk from the E train.

Their menu is busy yet engaging. They offer great dishes if you’re not super familiar with Indian food but want to be. It also offers a unique look into Bollywood culture, and how the food people eat is representative of more than just nutrition. If you’re in the area and are curious about Indian food (or really love Indian food) this casual, definitely millennial-friendly establishment is a must-try!
