The Biden Campaign is strengthening its ties to luxury fashion by launching a merch collection endorsed by none other than Anna Wintour.
Wednesday, September 9, 2020, Wintour and Dr. Jill Biden co-hosted an online launch of the Believe in Better Collection, a collection of clothing and accessories designed to promote Joe Biden’s campaign.
On Wednesday night, Anna Wintour and Dr. Jill Biden introduced this collection, spoke on their reasons for supporting Biden, and encouraged viewers to use their voices in the upcoming election. The Believe in Better Collection brings together 19 fashion designers who Anna Wintour believes to be remarkable people capable of using their platform for change in this country.
The Believe in Better collection is representative of American culture. It’s laidback, diverse, and inclusive. While these designers typically design more high fashion and out-of-the-box products, for this campaign, they designed products that Americans could wear for any occasion. Vera Wang created a “Vote Joe” hoodie, Joseph Altuzarra created bandanas, and Prabal Gurung created a t-shirt stating “future stronger in color.” These are clothing pieces that any American could wear, because after all, common Americans are the ones voting in this election.
While not all 19 designers were able to speak at the launch, Aurora James, Tory Burch, Vera Wang, Joseph Altuzarra, Kathryn and Lizzie Fortunato, Prabal Gurung, and Gabriela Hearst shared the products they designed in the collection and explained the importance of their contributions.
Anna Wintour first announced her support for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden back in March of this year. The most notable mark of this support comes from the May 2020 issue of Vogue, where Wintour stated, “He is unmistakably a man of character and has so many qualities that we are in desperately short supply of in Washington right now: decency, honor, compassion, trustworthiness, and best of all experience.” Her support for Biden continued to grow into a partnership with the Believe in Better Collection.
Since Donald Trump has been in office, he has viewed the majority of the fashion industry as having extreme left-wing political views. This is interesting because Vogue, “the fashion bible,” has continued to openly endorse Joe Biden, a candidate who many Democrats would view as moderate in his beliefs, especially in comparison to Bernie Sanders. While the fashion industry is perceived as being a very Democratic one, it’s not as far-left as one might think. As Gen Z begins to take over the industry in the future, this trend could change.
I and other Gen Z students nationwide began this election in support of Bernie Sanders, whose policies benefited the country and many young people. After Joe Biden was announced the candidate, a lot of the younger generation was disappointed. Despite our frustrations with the choice of political candidate this election, it’s important to recognize the concerning state of America. Most young voters will choose someone who end the pandemic, encourage equality, and help the student debt crisis.
During this time of political divide and fear, Vogue is using their platform and we should too. We’re all in this together. No amount of effort is too small when it comes to improving the nation and the world. As Dr. Biden stated at the end of the live release, “we deserve leadership worthy of this nation.” Whether you support Joe Biden or not, use your right to vote, for the future of the United States depends on it.
