Ways You Can Take Action Post-Election

By Sarah Fielding

Less than twenty-four hours after the election results were announced I had already signed up to receive volunteer emails from ten plus organizations. These spanned from women’s health, sexual assault, environmental issues, and, honestly, anything positive I could find.

The shock and despair I felt, as well as most other people I know, was indescribable. How could a country that seemed to be filled with such progress have allowed this to happen? I spent most of Wednesday in complete denial and fuming. Then I put my anger into action.

I saw somewhere that the only good thing about Trump being elected is people will refuse to be complacent. It’s true. There is a spark that has been ignited which will not go out until he is long gone. A Trump presidency stands against women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, minority rights and countless others. This is not the land of the free we were promised. To ensure the fight for equality continues it is important that we all remain in the fight, in any way we can. If you want to be a part of a peaceful protest, that’s great, stand with your friends. If you want to be more subtle, but just as impactful, I recommend volunteering for an organization you believe in. There is one, or most likely many, reasons why you disagree with a Trump future. Find groups that support that and do whatever you can, whether that’s donating money or time.

RAINN is an organization that supports sexual assault victims.

Planned Parenthood doesn’t need an introduction but it surely needs your help.

Research any topic with the word volunteer and sign up for email blasts.

If you don’t think you have the time to actually get involved in an organization or have no money to give, there is still so much you can do. I know you’ve heard this a lot, and it’s a pain, but take shorter showers. Conserving water can go a long way. Put positive energy into the world. Hold the door open for people, give up your seat on the subway, compliment someone who looks like they’re having a bad day. Two seconds really can create an impact.

For every Trump action there is an equal and opposite reaction, do that. It might seem impossible but, even with an orange misogynist running the country, together we really can still make this country, and the world, a better place.
