Is Primer a Necessity?

Primer? The first question you may ask is, ‘Is it makeup or skincare?’ But it’s both! You apply the primer after your skincare and before your makeup. This acts as a shield for your skin to prevent makeup from getting deep down into your pores. While acting as a skin shield, different brands have produced various formulas that tailor to the make-up finish that you desire. Primer also helps your makeup last a lot longer – I can personally vouch for that statement. Primer is an extra layer that gives your favorite foundation something to hold onto. Not only does it help the lasting power, but it can also make your skin look extra smooth and pore-less. And let’s be honest, that’s the look we all go for!

The next question you may have is, ‘Is primer a necessity?’ Of course not. But do you want the most out of your makeup and skincare? Absolutely – and a primer will give you just that. Primers also come in different textures to suit your own personal preference. They have creams, gels, liquids and even oils! Below I’ve listed some primer favorites along with their dupes and the rundown on the newest craze in the world of “priming.” Let’s get started.

If you want to splurge a little, you can treat yourself to the mini size of the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer for $16 or head to your closest Target to get the best dupe by NYX for only $9.

Splurge: Sephora, Smashbox, $16

Dupe: Target, NYX, $9

Unfortunately, the Too Faced primer does not come in a mini-size so you can ball out and sacrifice $30 on what’s personally my favorite primer ever, or you can save some coins and use the dupe by E.L.F for a heaven-sent $6.

Splurge: Too Faced, $30

Dupe: Walgreens, E.L.F., $6

The cult favorite POREfessional by Benefit will put you behind about $31, but Benefit also offers a mini-size they sell at Sephora and Ulta for just $12. However, if you aren’t a fan of the price, you can grab the dupe by Maybelline for only $6.

Splurge: Birchbox, Benefit, $31

Dupe: Walmart, Maybelline, $6

This luxurious primer will cost you a whopping $54 – but thank God they kept college students in mind and also provided a trial size that will only run you $19. Of course, if that is still a bit much I have your back with a dupe that will cost you $15.

Splurge: Sephora, Hourglass, $54

Dupe: Target, NYX, $15.99

And now for the newest and the coolest – primer water!

If you want something more refreshing, try using priming waters/sprays. They are a 3-in-1 icon because you can use it as a primer before starting your makeup, you can use it as a setting spray for after your makeup, and of course, it can be used as a  quick pick-me-up throughout the day. With these products, you are getting the most bang for your buck. If you want to ball out, they retail for $32, but they have also blessed us with the travel-size which retails for about $16 each.

Sephora, Smashbox, $32/$16

Sephora, Too Faced, $32/$15
